South African National Space Agency’s Space Science
The South African National Space Agency’s Space Science facility in Hermanus used to be called the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory. The facility’s functions have expanded to include the monitoring of space weather in addition to scientists monitoring Earth’s fluctuating electromagnetic field. They do fascinating work, and you can find out more by doing a tour – every Wednesday at 11:00, free of charge!
SANSA will provide early warnings on space weather close to earth. This includes notification of solar storms, solar winds and disturbances in the ionosphere. The SANSA facility also monitors solar flares that might affect electricity grids, satellites and digital information.
