Western Cape beach ranked as one of the world’s finest
Condé Nast Traveller has named Die Plaat Beach near Hermanus on their list of ‘The Best Beaches in the World’.
Markedly, it is the only beach in South Africa to be recognised among a list of 34 beaches worldwide.
WHERE IS DIE PLAAT BEACH LOCATED?
Die Plaat Beach is a CapeNature beach within Walker Bay Nature Reserve near Hermanus in the Overberg district of the Western Cape.
CapeNature is very proud of the recognition that highlights the beach’s natural beauty and unique features. The beach stretches 17km and offers rich biodiversity, historical significance, and also beautiful scenery, as reported by capetownetc.
Condé Nast Traveller described Die Plaat Beach as ‘a ruggedly beautiful swath of sand fringed by rocky limestone outcrops’.
Klipgat Cave located on the beach is a bat-filled cave where late Middle Stone Age people lived up to 85 000 years ago. It is also a vital nurturing ground for southern right whales, especially during the whale season from June to December.
SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT
Condé Nast Traveller’s ‘The Best Beaches in the World’ is a prestigious list. So, being one of the recognised beaches on the list is certainly a significant accomplishment.

Markedly, Die Plaat ranked 10th on the list of 34 of the best beaches globally.
Other beaches on the list included Palm Cove Beach in Australia, Ora Beach in Indonesia, Keem Bay in Ireland, and also Praia do Sancho in Brazil.
Interestingly, several Australian beaches were featured on the list.
