Wine Routes
The Cape Whale Coast has three different wine growing areas – Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai surrounds. These are wineries where you might meet the owner or bump into the winemaker during your visit as they are all boutique style establishments. Small, yet award winning.
Hermanus Wine Route includes Hemel-en-Aarde – famed for its outstanding Pinot Noir which earned this region the title of South Africa’s Burgundy. Hermanus Wine Hoppers provide a safari style experience for wine enthusiasts that makes it even easier to explore the different wineries of which some have restaurants, hiking routes and mountain bike trails. There are 2 specialist wine shops in Hermanus – Wine Village and Wine & Co that offers a range of South African wines. For a tasting experience without the effort of visiting the wineries The Wine Glass has a number of tasting options for the connoisseur.
Stanford offers a relaxed setting close to the Heritage Village. Living is easy in this unspoilt setting with one of the oldest houses still in existence in the Cape Overberg and also some of South Africa’s best wine.
Outside Gansbaai Lomond is a not to be missed experience with names of their wines dedicated to fynbos species that line the slopes surrounding the vineyards.
