Kfm Best of the Cape Awards: Overberg Winners

The 2021 Kfm Best of the Cape Awards recognised local businesses, entrepreneurs, places, people, activities and services in 30 categories.  The Overberg had finalists in 11 categories and won 6 categories:

  • Adventure – Southern Right Charters, Hermanus
  • Corner Shop – Soetmuisberg, Bredasdorp
  • Farm Stall – Houw Hoek, Bot River
  • Market – Hermanus Country Market
  • Pet friendly eatery – The Milkwood Restaurant and Beach Hut, Onrus
  • Wedding Venue – Murasie, Baardskeerdersbos

The competition brought acknowledgement to the business owners and staff who have worked hard during extremely tough conditions the past 18 months.  It lifted spirits and gave the hospitality industry interesting conversation when considering those who made it to the top 5 list.  Kfm did well in generating excitement and stretching the expectations right until the last call on Friday 3 September when all finalists were phoned and made to hang on until the winners were announced. Announcements were well timed to align with the start of Tourism Month.  A month during which accessibility, affordability, responsibility, and transformation in the tourism industry are considered.

We are proud of the specific categories where we took podium position – market, adventure, wedding venue, pet friendly eatery, farm stall, corner shop – because this is what the Overberg is really all about in offering country hospitality.

Equally important is the fact that these nominations became a bit of a bucket list for domestic travellers prompting people to explore the Western Cape and visit the places mentioned. We are encouraged to explore our regions.  The competition was a reminder of all the exceptional local businesses that surround us.  Also, it was a chance to reflect on the places whom we know to have good service and quality produce and be grateful to have these resilient entrepreneurs in our midst.  I wish we could hand a medal to every businessperson who still open the doors and deliver a professional service despite the struggles.
