Blue Flag Beaches
The Blue Flag status is a well-respected international award, ensuring that each Blue Flag beach is not only beautiful and safe but also environmentally friendly and socially responsible. As such, Blue Flag beaches are highly sought after by tourists.
In South Africa, the Blue Flag programme is managed by WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa). The strict criteria of the programme are set by the international co-ordinators of the Blue Flag campaign in Europe, the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education).
Water samples are taken at regular intervals and are tested by an independent laboratory.
Overstrand is exceptionally proud that two of its beaches – Grotto and Kleinmond are among the South African beaches that was accredited to display the Blue Flag.
People with disabilities can make use of the beach wheelchair that is available for use at Grotto and Kleinmond while lifeguards are there. This amphibious wheelchair has a sturdy aluminium frame and can carry a weight of up to 150 kg.
