Klein River

The Klein River is one of the most beautiful stretches of flat water river paddling in South Africa. In summer it is safe, sheltered from the wind and boasts a feast of bird watching. There are three river boat operators that offer cruises along the river. The Klein River was chosen by the Hungarian Olympic paddling team as a training ground for 6 weeks due to its lack of current and ideal setting. Guest houses on the river have canoes for their guests to use, otherwise canoes/kayaks can be rented in the village or bring your own and slide off the grassy banks of the river whilst keeping an eye out for Cape clawless otters that frequent these tranquil waters! The river also hosts an annual Canoe Race for ‘all-comers’ around March which is popular with Capetonians and others from further a field. Fun fact: Although the Klein River is 80 km long, it is the river with the shortest distance between its origin and mouth in the world (5 km as the crow flies!)
