The Southern Right Whales come to the shores of the Cape Whale Coast from June till November each year to mate and calve in the shallow waters. They are also visiting Brydes and Humpback whales.

The region has gained the reputation of offering the best land-based whale watching in the world, because of the excellent viewpoints provided by the cliff path along Walker Bay, Kleinmond, Hermanus, De Kelders and Gansbaai also have fantastic land-based lookout points, but in whale season you’ll even be able to spot whales while lying on the beach or eating breakfast on your patio. There are many options available when visitors want to get a glimpse of the whales. A walk along the cliff path is one. A flight with African Wings or Overberg Aviation will give you a bird’s eye view of the whales in the Walker Bay. Hermanus has the world’s one and only Whale Caller, Bulelani Ngidi who blows his kelp horn to announce whale sightings.

African Wings can take 3 passengers and depart from Standford aistrip. Shortest is a 30 minute flight for 1 to 3 people at R3850. Tel +27 (0) 82 555 7605
Overberg Aviation departs from the Heidehof Airstrip on the R43 between Gansbaai and Pearly Beach or from Grootbos. The price is R4500 for 1- 5 persons for a half hour trip. Tel +27 (0) 83 976 0324

There are also boats that start out from Hermanus and Gansbaai to give travellers an adventure on sea. The weather plays a huge role in the experience and if conditions are good then there are boat trips leaving at 9:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:00 daily. Areas designated for boat based whale watching have been carefully selected so as not to interfere with the whales’ habitat. There are three whale watching boats that leave Hermanus New Harbour for daily trips weather permitting. Prices are +/- R900 per person.
